SVIDA – Metro Shuttle Service

A last mile mobility solution.

Which industry did you provide the service?
Mass Transportation / Mobility

What are the general observations/ issues of this sector?
Transporation is one of the largest GHG emitting sector.
In 2022 global CO2 emissions from the transport sector grew by more than 250 Mt CO2 to nearly 8 Gt CO2, 3% more than in 2021.
Refer: https://www.iea.org/energy-system/transport

Emission from transport sector continue rise in India and across the globe.
Key issues faced by this sector are: lack of comprehensive solutions to bring down the emissions, lack of or costly alternatives to transition to alternate fuel vehicles, high cost of retrofitting existing fleet with new technologies, etc.

What was their requirement?
Svida is a last mile mobility solution. Svida buses ply from pick points to Metra stations. Pick points are ususally residential complexes and commercial establishments (IT).
Svida’s fleet of vehicles is diesel powered small city buses. They offer last mile connectivity at an affordable prices to the passengers travelling by metro.
If these passenges were to travel to Metro station, they would have used their own vehicles leading to more emissions, traffic congestion, parking space issues, etc.
When these passengers get down from the Metro, they need transport to reach their destination (such as  office). Svida takes care of this last mile connectivity challenge by plying on more than 72 KMs routes across the city of Hyderabad providing public bus transportation.

Svida accepts cash based payments from its passengers (hop-on, hop-off scenario) as well as Svida’s mobile app allows the passengers to book their ride and make payment on the app before hopping on the bus. Svida’s app is integrated (in-progress) with TerraBlu which calculates emission caused by the passenger’s ride (as per the booking) and presents an option to the customer to pay for offseting that emission by purchasing the carbon credits.
Svida is environment concious and wants to assess the emissions arising out of their vehicle operations. Svida intends to offset these emissions by purchasing and retiring the carbon credits from TerraBlu.
Svida shall also provide an option to each of its passenger to voluntarily offset their emissions due to their ride by purchasing the carbon credits from Svida as supplied by TerraBlu.

What were their problems?
Svida is looking to offer a seamless experiece for its passengers to not only book and pay for their rides but also assess their emission and present an option to voluntarily offset that emission in an instant, transparent and cost effective manner.
Svida is calculating its own emissions caused due to its bus operations and will offset those emissions to provide a carbon neutral ride to its passengers.
Svida is looking forward to get into a contractual agreement with a couple of large IT companies at Hyderabad where the employees of such organizations can travel in a sustainable manner by travelling through Svida.

How did you proceed?
Svida approached TerraBlu to enquire about the following:
1. capability to assess emissions for Svida’s bus operations and creating emission reports (GHG Protocol based emission reports)
2. capability of APIs to assess the emissions for each ride for each passenger using the app
3. capability to offer carbon credits in the required quantity to each passenger to offset their emissions (however small the quanity is [minimum 1 kg])
4. capability to offer carbon credits to Svida to offset the emissions due to their bus operations

1 carbon credit = 1000 kg of emission avoided/reduced

What research did you undertake?
TerraBlu analyzed the following:
1. GHG protocol covers emissions of 3 types, scope 1 (Direct), scope 2 (Indirect) and Scope 3 (Indirect for upstream and downstream). It was researched and concluded that, Svida’s bus operations will fall under Scope 1.
Svida was presented with 3 models to calculate the scope 1 emissions. These models were created in the increasing order of amount and variety of data required from Svida to be submitted to TerraBlu for calculating the emissions.
Svida selected the first model (Fuel consumption based emission assessment).
2. TerraBlu analyzed the additional requirements from Svida to create custom reports based on Svida’s requirement; mainly per passenger emission report and per route emission report.

What were the findings?
TerraBlu will help Svida to calculate the GHG protocol emissions reports for 5 months: Aug through December 2023.
This data was submitted by Svida to TerraBlu.
This data has information of all routes whre the buses operated during Aug 1st to Dec 31st, for the number of trips per route and the number of passengers travelling per day per route.

How did you assess?
TerraBlu’s project team analyzed the Svida’s data with help from TerraBlu’s in-house expertise and SaaS.

What did you implement?
TerraBlu’s project team used TerraBlu’s SaaS to upload the data provided by Svida to calculate the emissions as per the requirement and the detailed emission reports were created for Svida.

What solutions did you provide?
1. TerraBlu’s SaaS to calculate emissions for Svida’s operations for different assessment periods (month, week and day)
2. Standard GHG Emission Scope 1 reports and custom emission reports for Svida for the assessment period
3. Verification of these reports by the in-house experts before sharing them with Svida

How did it help them?
1. Svida has now access to most accurate and verified GHG Emission reports (Scope 1)
2. Svida’s IT team has started preparation to integrate TerraBlu API with their mobile ride booking app. Post this integration, each passenger shall get the amount of emission caused by their ride and option to offset that emission in the required quantity.

What were the transactions/ Stats?
Date range: Aug 1 to Dec 31, a total of 5 months
# routes: 40+
# passengers: 6000 to 8000 average per day

How did it impact through a broad level?
Svida is in a position to accurately assess and report their emissions in a detailed manner.
Svida and its passengers are able to offset their emissions by purchasing carbon credits from TerraBlu.

What was the customer experience?
Svida’s experience – yet to be received
Passenger experience – yet to be receivedd (API integration not completed yet, so this will take some time)

Testimonial- if any
None available right now, but Svida’s leadership can write, share and even record their testimony.

Status
1. Emission assessment – completed
2. Report generation – completed
3. Report verification – in progress
4. Emission offset – not started (TerraBlu can offset in a min as soon as the request for offset is received from Svida)
